We’re thrilled to announce that Casey Szmyt has been selected as Makers Mill’s next Program Director following a thoughtful and highly competitive search process.
For Makers Mill, this is an exciting moment, not only because of the talent, experience, and creativity Casey brings to the role, but because it marks the beginning of a new chapter in our organization’s story.
Transitions are important moments in the life of any organization. They offer an opportunity to reflect on where we’ve been, celebrate the people who helped build the foundation, and look ahead to the future.
At Makers Mill, we find ourselves in one of those moments.
As Casey prepares to step into this leadership role, we also recognize the extraordinary contributions of outgoing Program Director Carol Holyoake. Through years of dedication, creativity, and care, Carol helped shape Makers Mill into the vibrant community makerspace it is today. From developing programs and supporting instructors to welcoming new members and helping thousands of people discover the joy of making, Carol’s impact can be felt throughout every corner of the organization.
The programs, relationships, and culture that make Makers Mill special today are built in no small part because of Carol’s belief in the power of creativity to bring people together.
Finding the right person to build upon that foundation was no small task.
Throughout the search process, Casey stood out not only for her professional experience, but for her deep commitment to creativity, community, and lifelong learning.
Casey brings a unique combination of operational leadership, project management expertise, relationship building, and creative passion. Most recently, she served as an Account Manager with a Portland based digital marketing agency, where she coordinated branding, website development, client relationships, and growth initiatives. Prior to that, she spent six years with Home Instead, including serving as Director of Operations, where she led teams, developed systems, and coordinated services for seniors throughout Southern New Hampshire.
Just as importantly, Casey is a maker herself.
Through her business, Pen & Periwinkle, Casey creates illustrations, stationery, prints, and other handmade goods and regularly participates in local makers markets. Creativity is not simply something she supports professionally. It is something she lives every day.
What impressed us most throughout the hiring process was Casey’s commitment to people. When asked what she has enjoyed most throughout her career, her answer centered on building meaningful relationships and helping others succeed. She is passionate about creating welcoming spaces where people can learn new skills, share ideas, make connections, and discover their own creative potential.
Many of the qualities that have helped Makers Mill thrive over the years, curiosity, collaboration, generosity, and community, are values Casey shares wholeheartedly. She understands that Makers Mill is more than a building or a collection of classes. It is a place where people come to learn, create, connect, and belong.
As Carol passes the torch and Casey steps into this role, we are filled with gratitude for the past and excitement for the future.
Please join us in thanking Carol for her years of service and in giving Casey a warm Makers Mill welcome. We are excited for the energy, experience, creativity, and care she will bring to our community and look forward to all that lies ahead.
Welcome, Casey.
