Description
Soon enough, anglers will return to Squam Lake by water and by shore to target large and small-mouth bass for their spring spawn. But have you ever wondered why these fish start bedding now? Or how they spent their winter? Come join us at the Squam Lakes Association on Saturday, April 26, from 8:30 – 11am, for a roughly 2-mile kayak trip around Piper’s Cove and learn about how the seasons affect fish behavior. Participants will learn when and where to find fish for their angling or viewing pleasure, and we’ll also discuss the habits of other fish species that live throughout the lake’s water column.
Participants should meet at the SLA building at 8am, then we will head down to the docks and outfit you with kayaks, paddles, and life vests. Please come prepared with plenty of water, snacks, and sunscreen, as we’ll be out on the water for a few hours. We won’t be fishing on this outing, but you’re sure to gain a better understanding of how to “think like a fish” for the next time you cast a line. This is a great time of year – and time of day – to hopefully spot some big bass on their spawning beds.
For more information, or to sign up for this Adventure Ecology program, visit the SLA website (squamlakes.org) or contact the SLA directly (603-968-7336). The SLA also offers other Adventure Ecology programs throughout the year. These free programs are open to the public and cover a variety of nature and conservation related topics. The Adventure Ecology programs are presented by the LRCC AmeriCorps members at the SLA who perform important conservation work in support of the Association’s mission.
The Squam Lakes Association is dedicated to conserving for public benefit the natural beauty, peaceful character and resources of the watershed. In collaboration with local and state partners the SLA promotes the protection, careful use and shared enjoyment of the lakes, mountains, forests, open spaces and wildlife of the Squam Lakes Region.
